Men’s Watches
When you search the second hand watch listings, chances are you’ll find more men’s watches than any other. But what is it that makes a watch a men’s watch? Well, generally speaking, it’s a matter of size.
Typically, the size of the case of used men’s watches is 37-39mm. Naturally, with the case being of a larger size than a women’s watch, the strap also tends to be wider.
Broadly speaking, there are five main styles to look out for in second hand men’s watches. The Diving Watch is a style that lends itself particularly to men’s fashions, due to the rugged construction of the casing of the design. As well as this, they tend to feature luminous dials and hands. Even to this day, most men’s diving watches take their design cues and inspiration from the iconic 1953 Rolex Submariner.
Another classic style of man’s watch is The Dress Watch. Often a dress watch features an understated design, a simple face and usually Roman numerals. A dress watch typically has a simple leather strap and as used men’s watches go, dress watches tend to be thin too.
The Aviation Watch, dates back to 1911 when Cartier created one for flying pioneer, Alberto Santos Dumont. The bezel and slide rule allowed pilots to see large amounts of information in the days before electronic navigation.
There’s something about the likes of diving and flying that have a certain masculine glamour. Motorsport is very much the same and this is why The Driving Watch has also become an iconic style of used men’s watches. Typically, driving watches feature a chronograph complication. Many feature stopwatches and some also have a tachymeter.
In recent years, a more modern and contemporary style – The Minimalist Watch – has also become popular. Influenced by Bauhaus design, these simple pieces tend to be powered by quartz movements.
Ladies’ Watches
It’s probably fair to say that the world of watches is predominantly a man’s world. It’s true that men buy more watches than women. Therefore, it’s no surprise that watch advertising focuses mainly on male brands and styles. The wearing of wristwatches grew substantially in the 1920s and 1930s for men. Ever since that time, the male domination of the watch industry has largely remained. Indeed, to a certain extent, it could be argued that the women’s watch market has been something of a sideshow for decades. Used ladies’ watches have simply often been smaller versions of male watches, with slimmer casing and straps. Sometimes, jewels and precious stones are featured to add a touch of femininity.
Of course, there is a lot more to the world of used ladies’ watches than that. The female watch market might still exist in the shadow of its male counterpart, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a lot to commend and admire about second hand ladies’ watches – and there’s certainly a lot of choice.
A round case is still the classic shape for a ladies’ watch. Having said that, in recent decades, rectangular and square designs have become increasingly popular for women’s styles.
You will see plenty of casual second hand ladies’ watches that are ideal for daily wear. Casual watches tend to have medium to larger dials and are usually without the jewels and decorative work that often adorns ladies’ styles.
On the flipside, jewellery watches tend to feature plenty of precious metals and jewels: gold, platinum, diamonds, sapphires and pearls. It’s in this sphere of used ladies’ watches that the designs tend to be more exclusive and expensive. Jewellery watches usually feature ornate dial decorations.
Fashion ladies’ watches are usually less formal and more driven by current trends and the name or logo of the brand itself.
Children’s Watches
Children’s watches often get overlooked in the market and it’s true that there is much less of an emphasis on the designer, exclusive and high-end models when it comes to used children’s timepices.
Fun, practicality and versatility are the key considerations with second hand children’s watches. One thing’s for sure, you certainly won’t be lacking for choice and options. Analogue or digital still remains a key question to consider but when it comes to the style of used children’s watches, you’ll see that it is largely dictated by the age of the child that you are buying the watch for.
For those of younger years, styles tend to be dominated by bright colours and film or cartoon characters. Sporty designs are also highly popular with children’s watch designs. The older the target age of second hand children’s watches, the plainer the design of the watch tends to be.
Rubber straps are particularly durable which makes rubber a sensible choice fore second hand children’s watches. As well as being tough, rubber looks sleek and stylish and has the added bonus of being waterproof and easy to wipe clean. Not only that, rubber is a cost effective option too.
Having said that, leather straps remain a popular choice in the designs available for used children’s watches.
The good news is that if you are looking for used children’s watches, you can pick up some real bargains. You can pick up watches in all manner of shapes and designs. It’s easy to choose a style that suits the interests of any child. Plain and simple or imaginative and creative, the choice is yours. Whether you are looking for used children’s watches that are practical and versatile, or eye-catching and fun accessories, you really can find a watch to capture any mood or feeling.
Smart Watches
A relatively recent addition to the history of the wristwatch is the smart watch. Our lives are so full of technology and watches have always been at the forefront of cutting edge developments. In the same way that the days of a mobile telephone being a device that is merely used to make calls or send messages are long gone, so are the days of a watch simply being used to tell the time.
Essentially, smart watches cross the bridge between a conventional watch and a smart phone. As with other types of watches, you can pick up real bargains looking for used smart watches on the second hand market.
Apple are the market leaders, as they are in so many areas of technology these days. The Apple Watch is the most famous (and popular) smart watch – and one of the most expensive too. This is another very good reason why purchasing used smart watches on the second hand market is such a sensible option.
The most important thing to remember when looking at smart watches is the issue of compatibility. An Apple Watch only works with other Apple devices. Similarly, Android smart watches are only compatible with Android phones and devices.
Smart watches are more about the features they contain than they are about being a fashion statement. Having said that, used smart watches can have a pleasing and appealing design aesthetic too. The best advice to give regarding buying used smart watches is to focus on the features you need to suit your lifestyle.
For example, many smart watches are specifically designed for the fitness market and are primarily produced as fitness accessories. You will find many great options, but you need to make sure that a particular model has the key features you are looking for. Check specification details carefully to make sure that you are not left disappointed.
