Just like most brands that date back as long as TAG Heuer, the company has gone through a whole host of brand changes, owners and directions over the years. You don’t get to be one of the longest-standing brands in the watch industry without a colourful history – and when you casually mention that TAG Heuer have been continuously producing watches since before the outbreak of the American Civil War, it puts into perspective just how rich that history is.
The brand updates its flagship model
There might be an awful lot that goes into the mix to make the brand TAG Heuer what it is today, but for many people one name is synonymous with the brand – and that name is Carrera.
Therefore, it’s only fitting that TAG Heuer have decided to kickstart its 160th birthday celebrations with a recreation of the iconic Carrera 2447S from the 1960s. The reimagining of this classic – The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition.
The new model is a faithful recreation of the original Carrera timepiece, but naturally it is finished to the latest modern standards and is powered by TAG Heuer’s famed 02 automatic chronograph movement.
The anniversary edition features a 39mm case as opposed to the original 2447S model, which had a 36mm case. This is still slim enough not to be seen as chunky or clunky. The slightly larger case might not to be to everyone’s taste, but most people will be in complete agreement over one thing – the dials look stunning and clean and crisp, as do the sub-dials.
The verdict
All in all, as you would expect with a brand of its pedigree, TAG Heuer recognises when it comes to a classic simple watch such as the Carrera, the devil is in the small details. The 160th anniversary model is a faithful and ultimately successful re-boot of a genuine classic.
