The 1950s represented a sea change when it came to men’s watches. The Rolex Submariner revolutionised watch fashions and kicked off the trend for dive watches. Rolex’s top competitors in the market had to adjust. This meant that Omega changed approach with its seminal piece, the Seamaster. This was remodelled as the chunky alternative to the Submariner.
For a time, the classic gentlemen’s watch went out of fashion, but now the ultimate in cool is very much back. To mark the return, the original Seamaster was brought back too. In fact, Omega issued two models to mark the 70th anniversary of the Seamaster.
70th anniversary Seamaster models
Both are coveted pieces that you should definitely look out for. They honour and respectfully pay homage to one of the most revered watch designs of all time. An opaline silver dial is domed and set with a striking white gold Omega logo. Sapphire suits inside the super-stylish 38mm steel case. The beauty is in the simplicity of the piece. Omega resisted the urge to do much with it. It’s simply a throwback that speaks for itself.
The anniversary piece features a sapphire case to its back. What’s more, there’s a visual tribute to the many mariners and aviators that used Omega pieces over the years, with a depiction of a Chris-Craft boat and a classic Gloster Meteor aircraft.
The sub-seconds model features a calibre of 8804. Meanwhile, the centre-seconds model has a calibre 8806. This is really where the contemporary modern day meets the traditional and classic. Omega might be seen as down the pecking order these days against the might of Rolex. However, the stunning 70th anniversary Omega Seamaster models are a timely reminder of just how great the Omega brand was, and still can be.
